Looking at art as a fundamental aspect of humanity is core to
the work of performance artists Igor Josifov
and Michael Ryan Noble. Their performance
lecture Reflections on Originality
investigates ideas of authenticity in art and questions how the
language of art is at once original and derivative. Throughout the residency
they will be recreating and copying their previous performance works
“Manumission,” “Emit” and “Flooded” as well as exploring the idea of copying as
a part of their fellow Watermill residents’ new work. Concluding their Watermill
residency, the artists will present their research through performance as well
as exhibition of photos and drawings, and will address such concepts as artistic
integrity, inspiration, creative vision, intellectual property, appreciation and
interpretation.
The Watermill Center was founded in 1992 by artistic director Robert Wilson as an international, multi-disciplinary center for studies in the arts and humanities. Located in a secluded, natural setting in Southampton, Long Island, New York, the Center has established a worldwide reputation as a unique laboratory for artists, students and individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore the creative process. Through cross-disciplinary exploration, apprenticeship-style training with master artists, and creative exchange, the Watermill Center supports new work in all artistic disciplines, while inspiring a new generation of performers, artists, and global citizens.
